Garagona (Camp)
General Information

Located in: Quebec, Canada

A group of citizens dedicated to our cause created Camp Garagona in 1969 in Frelighsburg, in the Eastern Townships. Primarily a residential camp during the summer months and a respite centre providing support to their caregivers the rest of the year, Garagona welcomes people living with intellectual deficiencies and/or autism spectrum disorders. Our client pool comes from across Quebec and special attention is given to people from the Brome Missisquoi area. OUR MISSION To provide a broad range of bilingual socio-recreational services during days, weeks and weekends to people living with intellectual deficiencies and/or autism spectrum disorders. OUR SUMMER PROGRAM According to the theme chosen for the weekend, days and/or weeks, our counsellors organize creative and/or sport activities that will help campers improve their self-worth and their artistic and physical sport capabilities. The possibilities are many: cooking, visual arts, theater, walks in the woods and other activities. The natural and cultural riches available in the area around Frelighsburg amply satisfy Garagona’s objectives to provide a joyful, enriching and entertaining experience for participants. OUR RESPITE PROGRAM According to the theme chosen for the weekend, days and/or weeks, our counsellors organize creative and/or physical activities that include camper participation. The possibilities are many: cooking, art, theater, walks in the woods, ice fishing, and other activities. Providing enriching and entertaining experiences for our campers is easy in the beautiful natural setting that is Frelighsburg. A PERSONOLIZED REGISTRATION To better personalize the registration, we’ll ask you whether you are registering a new or former camper. All new campers must complete a pre-evaluation so that we can obtain a reliable picture of the person’s health and independence. We will then send you the registration documents to be completed and returned to us, either by mail or e-mail, within 30 days of reserving. If you do not return the completed documents, we will assume that you are no longer interested and we will cancel the reservation. For existing campers, we’ll update your information over the telephone and only send you an authorisation form to complete and return to us. Weekend Observation and Evaluation Respite For all new campers, we will ask you to register the camper for a compulsory weekend at Camp Garagona. We will observe his/her interactions with the others and evaluate the support this person will require during the summer session. This step helps us to compose groups of like-minded and similarly able campers so that they each get the most out of their vacation at camp. TRANSPORT SERVICE Return bus transport service between Brossard and Frelighsburg is available to our campers for each session.
